“Magic,Love, Mystery”: Peter Samelson at Chicago Magic Lounge

**** Do you believe in magic? Over the last few years, Chicago has become the leader in magic shows and theaters. While we have been fortunate in having Dennis Watkins in town, since the opening of the Chicago Magic Lounge, we have been treated to a myriad of wonderful, magical performers.

For those of you unfamiliar with this unique space in the Andersonville neighborhood, The Chicago Magic Lounge takes us back in time. You enter the building located at 5050 N. Clark Street through a laundromat, ring the service bell, and the magic begins!

Before entering the main stage area, there is a small lounge where a magician will start your adventure. When it is time to go to the show, you move over to a library area where you will see many works of magical art and items- they are all real! Once there, the shelves will part and you will make your way into the theater where you will be seated. Every seat, no matter where allows full vision of the stage area where for around 90 minutes you will be in a unique world of magic.

While you are being seated where you can order drinks and menu items, magicians will stop by your table and perform unique tricks. Yes, within inches of you and your party, magic will take place and each one of these magicians has their own style. Many of them also do their own shows as part of the Magic Lounge “family”.

Wednesday nights are the special performance nights where one magician takes the stage for  several weeks. Currently on the main stage ( on Wednesday nights) is Peter Samelson and his one-man show, “ Magic,Love,Mystery”.

The show is a delight and Samelson’s storytelling pattern is unique. He is great at getting the audience involved and does many a trick that we have witnessed before, but with his own twist and flavor making it seem new. Last night was press night and some of the radio and TV personalities in the audience got involved. Ellen Miller, of WCPT’s “Out Chicago”, a show that goes on a few hours before mine found herself in a mind reading card trick and as I watched her walk the room with her “mentor” saw her truly get into it. She even read WGN’s Paul Lisnek’s cards right.

I am not one to do spoilers for magic shows, but I will tell you that  all of what you see during this 90 minutes will come back at the end to tie each segment of the act into a conclusion that is mind boggling.
