*****Remember a song that started “Are you lonely tonight?” Elvis sang that and many a teenager felt that he was singing directly to them. Loneliness is something that most people attempt to ignore, but cannot escape. In today’s world, we know that many friendless people are not as lonely as they were in years past, thanks to the marvelous world of AI and computer technology. “Octet”, a marvelous work by Dave Malloy ( who wrote the music, lyrics, book and did the vocal arrangement) and keenly directed by Keira Fromm, we meet eight individuals who are part of those who are addicted to technology, and how their lives have been affected. We are at what appears to be an AA meeting, but it is not as one might expect.
This is a production that was a SOLD-OUT, SMASH hit at Raven Theatre, which produces three shows a year and hosts a number of newer companies each year, assisting newer theaters in getting exposure in the Chicago “theater scene”. This particular production did so well and impressed so many audience members, bringing it to the attention of the community, that The Goodman, a company that is always seeking new works to share with their audience and members, jumped at the opportunity to bring this work from the Edgewater area of the city to the Downtown Theater Zone.
Let’s face it- the internet and our cell phones have taken on lives of their own. Go to a restaurant and watch the diners at the tables. They are not talking to each other, but rather communicating on their mobile phones, or playing games or checking out facts about what they have just ordered. When you go to an event, yes, even a theater, people hold on to their phones, after taking a photo of the program and themselves so they can post it on Facebook or one of the other social platforms. When the announcement comes to please turn the phone off, many will do so, but others will silence and slide into their purse or pocket, keeping it handy “just in case” they are needed. Is there a bat signal on your phone? Are you going to be asked to save the world? The answer is a definite NO! But just in case…”I am ready”!
I will tell you that the 8 actors assembled to bring this 95 minutes of story ( no intermission) is absolutely amazing. Please understand this is a unique musical as there are zero instruments. The music is created by the sounds generated by the 8 powerful performers. Yes, it is a cappella choral group, and they are magical as they often blend into a sound that takes your breath away. They are: Neala Barron, Elliot Esquivel, Joryhebel Ginorio, Jordan Golding, Teressa Lagamba, Ryder Dean McDaniel, Sam Shankman and Grace Steckler. A perfect blend of voices to make this a special theatrical event. This is one that you will think about as you text a message, play a game or perhaps leave a message trying to find someone to “play with”.
