“The Cube- Chicago” by Mark Reincke

***** As we simply try to cope in an increasingly shadowy time, this tense world urgently needs a collective play break. Get thee to The Cube for a truly fun night out in a visually stunning setting on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile! This is a place where the outside world just fades away and one steps into a world of adventure and friendly competition, where everyone is your friend, mentor and advocate.

The Cube has brought to life one of the world’s most popular TV gameshows and has highly successful recreational facilities in Manchester, U.K. and London drawing a wide and enthusiastic audience. And now The Cube is opened at 600 N. Michigan Avenue. Who knew there was such an important void that needed to be filled in the very heart of Chicago?

As you enter (from Ontario between Michigan and Rush), you are whisked up an escalator into heights that can startle the faint of heart.  Immediately upon arrival, you begin to feel a soothing, relaxed vibe thanks to the cool musical choices and bold lighting – above, and below, and all around – that can make anyone look pretty good!  The dramatic beauty of the space begins to unfold as you enter and begin to make your way past three cocktail bars, comfortable seating stations throughout, a delectable food station, and those iconic and colorful glass cubes – 21 altogether.  The Cube spans what appears to be an entire floor overlooking Michigan Avenue and boasts of over 25,000 square feet of premium entertainment space. All of this, of course, creates a buzz and impact that any commercial public space would want to emulate. But it is perhaps The Cube’s staff that contributes mightily to making this work so well as they set the tone and create the spark. And get people moving!

Whether you are a competitor or spectator, you will have great fun.  Couples or friends will test each other’s focus, control and especially nerves, while the pressure builds and the clock is ticking. And you are on full display. And the audience and staff are there rooting you on to beat The Cube. Guests select seven of the 21 games to test their skills in balance, memory, speed, nerve, precision and sheer determination. And folks catch on fast and have a really good chance of beating the odds.  And I always get a kick out of seeing nicely-dressed, attractive people in very awkward positions, bending to grab balls dropped or ducking from sponge cubes being thrown at them (they should try to catch them!) or moving abruptly to complete a task as fast as they can.

The Cube team members were engaging, helpful, highly enjoyable as they gently encourage you to do things in this highly immersive environment you otherwise might not do! And they do it with laughter and good nature. The staff was seamless in their ability to be there, to be helpful, to ensure you are having a good time.  They clearly have been trained to make the experience that much more entertaining.  And you may say, The Cube is not necessarily “my thing”, but you may be surprised. This is a great thing for our locals and visitors alike, for office team building, for friends and colleagues to come together and recreate old rivalries, and families and friends to spend some quality time together. People were having a blast, and it’s all good fun! Every carefully curated detail from the lighting, to the oversize scale, to the design of the Cubes themselves, to the color palettes – and the “newness” of the place – provide a dopamine-boosting experience.

Perhaps the true genius of this new concept is how it brings people together. Played in teams of two, or in a large group, there are tailored packages available. I had more laughs and pleasant exchanges with a whole host of folks I had never met before.

Disneyland has always claimed to be the happiest place on Earth.  With the arrival of The Cube seventy years later, we may have to reconsider the accuracy of Disney’s claim.
