On a perfectly beautiful Sunday in Autumn, the annual Community Walk Fundraiser for Special Gifts Theatre at Techny Prairie Park in Northbrook couldn’t have been better. At 10:00 a.m., the music filled the park, and as staff, Board members, performers, and parents gathered for a quick energy bite under the pavilion, you could feel the day’s excitement. The 2027 season is upon us, and today we thank everyone who helps us reach our goal of bringing performers to our stages.
I was prepared to do the walk without taking breaks as I did last year. While it is only a 1-mile and 1-block walk, and shouldn’t be hard, I must say that a great portion of the trail is gravel, which is like walking on sand. I found that by inching over to the grass, I was far more comfortable, and doing this, plus having a weekly leg massage ( lymphatic) helped a great deal. ( not to mention losing 40 pounds).
After the walk, where I met some new friends, we were entertained, had some water and snacks and then some awards were handed out to those who raised the most funds on the walk. To finish off the morning, we were visited by John Manchester, owner of Windy City Sweets in Chicago, so he could deliver the check for the annual Around the Town Chicago versus Out Chicago ICE CREAM CONTEST.
