“Hitch * Cocktails” reviewed by Frank Meccia

**** For more than 35 years, The Annoyance Theatre & Bar has been one of Chicago’s most influential and beloved comedy institutions. As both a theater and a training center, it has played a vital role in shaping the city’s world-renowned comedy scene by entertaining audiences while helping generations of aspiring comedians, writers, actors, and improvisers develop their craft. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of improv or simply looking for a memorable night out, The Annoyance continues to deliver the bold, creative, and unpredictable entertainment that has made Chicago the comedy capital of America.

Over the decades, The Annoyance has earned its reputation by producing fearless original comedy that pushes creative boundaries. It is home to the legendary Co-Ed Prison Sluts, the theater’s longest-running production and one of Chicago’s most iconic stage comedies. The theater has also become known for inventive productions such as Shark Tank: The Musical, proving that almost any concept can be transformed into an unforgettable evening of laughter in the hands of talented performers.

One of the theater’s newest highlights is Hitch Cocktails, currently performing on the intimate, small stage every Friday at 9:00 p.m. and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Inspired by the suspenseful storytelling of legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock, the show combines mystery, comedy, and improvisation into an experience unlike anything else in Chicago. Every performance begins with audience suggestions that become the foundation for an entirely original suspense story. No two performances are ever alike, making each visit a unique theatrical experience.

What truly sets Hitch Cocktails apart is its creative integration of live mixology into the performance. Throughout the approximately 80-minute show, the bartender invents brand-new cocktails inspired by the unfolding story. The actors are required to drink these original creations as the performance progresses, adding another unpredictable layer to the already fast-moving improvisation. Audience members can also order the same experimental cocktails, allowing everyone to become part of the evening’s adventure.

On the night I attended, I decided to try the Flaming Doritos Cocktail. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted—bold, surprisingly delicious, and certainly memorable. One drink was more than enough to leave me feeling the effects, but it perfectly captured the playful spirit of the evening and became another entertaining part of the overall experience.

The cast delivered an outstanding performance from beginning to end. Their quick thinking, sharp comedic instincts, and ability to weave audience suggestions into a fully realized suspense story were genuinely impressive. The performers balanced mystery and comedy with remarkable skill, creating moments of genuine tension that were immediately followed by laugh-out-loud punchlines. The chemistry among the cast members was evident throughout the performance, making the entire production feel polished despite being completely improvised.

The intimate theater space also adds to the experience. The audience feels connected to both the performers and the bartender, creating an atmosphere where everyone becomes invested in the story as it unfolds. By the end of the evening, the audience wasn’t just watching a show—they had become part of it.

While Hitch Cocktailsis absolutely worth the price of admission on its own, it represents only a small sample of everything The Annoyance Theatre has to offer. On most evenings, visitors can choose from four to six different productions, including improv, sketch comedy, original musicals, experimental theater, and stand-up performances. The constantly changing lineup means there is always something fresh to discover, making repeat visits highly rewarding.

Beyond its performances, The Annoyance is equally respected for its Training Center, which has helped thousands of students develop skills in improvisation, comedy writing, acting, directing, and performance. Many successful comedians and entertainers have trained on its stages before going on to careers in television, film, and live theater. Whether your goal is to perform professionally or simply build confidence and have fun, the school’s welcoming environment makes it one of Chicago’s premier places to study comedy.

Located at 851 W. Belmont Ave.in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, The Annoyance Theatre remains one of the city’s true cultural treasures. It is a place where creativity thrives, risks are encouraged, and audiences are guaranteed an evening filled with laughter and surprises. Whether you’re visiting Chicago for the first time or you’re a local searching for your next favorite comedy venue, The Annoyance deserves a place at the top of your list. From legendary productions and innovative new shows like Hitch Cocktailsto outstanding comedy classes and an unmatched commitment to original entertainment, The Annoyance Theatre continues to prove why it has remained a Chicago institution for more than three decades.
