“Riverdance 30- The New Generation Brings Together Tradition and Innovation” reviewed by Breanne George

****More than 30 years after it first captivated audiences, Riverdance returns with a powerful new production that celebrates its storied past and confidently embraces the future.

From the opening moments, Riverdance 30 – The New Generation sets the tone with a heartfelt tribute to the show’s Irish dance legacy. A montage of footage (from the 1990s through present day) reminds the audience of the cultural phenomenon Riverdance has become – highlighting iconic appearances, including its Grammy Award win for Best Musical Show Album in 1997.

It’s a nostalgic nod to the global impact of the production, while also marking the transition to a new generation of performers, all of whom were not yet born when Riverdance debuted. Fun fact: Lead dancer Kieran Bryant has a personal connection to the show, as his older brother toured the world with Riverdance since 2013.

While Riverdance 30 stays true to its roots, composer Bill Whelan has re-recorded and remastered the original musical score for this tour. It’s a subtle yet impactful update that complements the show’s modern staging. This sense of evolution is a central theme throughout the production.

The performers deliver the same precision and synchronicity that have long defined Riverdance, but they bring a fresh energy and athleticism that feels distinctly modern. The choreography blends traditional Irish step dance with contemporary influences, creating moments that feel both familiar and brand new.

These moments are further elevated by state-of-the-art lighting, projections and motion graphics. Sweeping visuals of Irish landscapes, celestial scenes and other mesmerizing imagery create an immersive experience that enhances both the emotional and visual impact of each performance.

The first act is deeply rooted in the spirit of Ireland’s past, drawing inspiration from the myths, legends and cultural traditions that helped shape the country’s identity. The performances transport the audience to a world where storytelling, folklore and history intertwine. Combined with rich visuals and atmospheric lighting, the first half of the show honors the origins of Irish culture while setting the stage for the story’s evolution.

The production then shifts to the experience of Irish immigration to America. Through both music and movement, the performances reflect on the emotional weight of leaving home and celebrate the resilience and cultural influence of those who carried their traditions across the Atlantic. This part of the show captures the vibrancy of Irish culture as it took root in new communities. The performers combine traditional step dance with modern influences to showcase how Irish culture continues to evolve.

One of the most striking sequences comes in a bold, urban-inspired scene set against the backdrop of Brooklyn, New York. With projections of the Brooklyn Bridge and a dynamic cityscape illuminating the stage, the performers trade traditional costumes for modern streetwear. The result is a West Side Story-style dance-off, which allows performers to showcase their individual solos and personal flair. It’s an unexpected experience that broadens the show’s appeal, particularly for younger audiences.

While Riverdance 30 is firmly grounded in Irish tradition, this production also embraces a more global perspective. Interwoven throughout the show are performances that pay homage to other cultures, highlighting the universal language of music and dance. From the rhythmic energy of American tap dancers to the fiery intensity of Flamenco, these moments add depth and diversity to the production.

Riverdance 30 also shines a well-deserved spotlight on its musicians who are given multiple opportunities to step forward with solo performances (including acclaimed fiddler and violinist Haley Richardson). These moments serve as a reminder that this timeless production is as much about the music as it is about Irish step dancing.

With eye-catching new costumes, cutting-edge design and a cast that embodies both tradition and innovation, Riverdance 30 – The New Generation successfully bridges past and present. It pays tribute to the legacy that made the show an international phenomenon while welcoming a new generation of audiences to discover it.

For longtime fans and first-time viewers alike, this latest iteration proves that Riverdance is an evolving work of art.
