For years, going to the movies in Highland Park has been at the Renaissance in the Downtown area. They came into town after the original Highland Park Theater was closed. They are now “Gone with the Wind”, so to speak and thanks to Steve Sarowitz and his Wayfarer Studio partners, the theater has been reborn as Wayfarer Theaters.
There are still five screens and fairly intimate theaters allowing for them to roll feature films as well as specials and documentaries. The intent of course, is to bring a theater for the people who live in the community and surrounding areas. In some cases, they will do films that are also tied to current events and will have discussion groups to follow the film. By doing this, they add education to entertainment, something missing from the typical venue.
In the future, there are even hints of possibly having some live entertainment in this location as well as films. They have full concessions and a cocktail bar. The popcorn is tasty and fresh as we found out tonight as we attended the showing of “Air” ( BTW- great production of a sterling story). They have a snack pack for $5 that will blow your mind!
While they have not remodeled the seating area ( yet), they have cleaned up the theaters and they have added a staff of people who truly care. That is always a good sign. Many of us, familiar with the original, know that the area is getting reborn ( after the pandemic), and appreciate the fact that a person like Sarowitz has stepped up to the plate.
They have a special membership program that is amazing. $25 per month allows you to attend the theater every day and as many as you can sit through. If you are retired and a movie buff, this is probably the greatest program available.
The theaters are located at 1850 N. Second Street ( second floor and they have an elevator and escalator). The phone number is 872-873-1030
Ticket prices are $10 ( $8.00 for seniors)
