Magic! Like a great many others, I am always entranced when I see a magician at work. Yes, I am aware that they are doing tricks and that “the hand is quicker than the eye”. I know that the fancy stuff they do is geared to draw your eye away from what they are truly doing, but despite knowing this, I am captured by the true choreography of what they do. Chicago is lucky to have Dennis Watkins, a third generation “master” magician here. He has done some theater ( His Harry Houdini is a masterpiece that House theater presented) and travels the country with his Magic Parlour show. This is a very intimate show that my grandson and I attended in the Palmer House several years ago
Now, with Covid-19, magic is impossible to see. How can you watch a magician work with social distancing? Well through the magic of ZOOM, Watkins has found a way, “The Magic Parlour at Home” which will be available thru February 27th on your computer ( or Smart TV) on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. ( special Sunday performance on Valentines Day, Sunday February 14th at 7:30 p.m.).
The virtual show has been redesigned for group and family viewings. The magic is a little different and very interactive. There are card tricks ( make sure you have a brand new deck of cards at hand) mind reading and interactive magic that will include audience members. note: in his cabaret ” parlour” almost every viewer was used in a trick. Not sure how he does that from home, BUT I know that I will be watching to see.
