[rating=5]One of my favorite small theatres located in Rogers Park is the Jarvis Square Theatre, home for Theatre Above the Law. This ensembled-led company’s mission is to challenge the norm by presenting classics in a relatable way. This cast of 7 took the fables stories of the Grimm Brothers and added to the story. I have to be careful and not review the surprise ending, The Grimm stories to be honest were very dark, it was Disney that gave them all happy endings. The Grimm brothers ,Jacob and Wilhelm , were raised in a middle-class German family, with a nice home, and servants. After their father’s death, they were placed in extreme poverty. During this time, they started to collect German folklore, after graduating from college, they built strong bonds between them, even though the brothers differed so much in temperament. This led to some of the stories they wrote.
This year, we deal with The Frog Prince, Juniper tree Little Red Riding Hood and , Rumpelstiltskin. It seems we have to have a place for fairy tales to live on in, and now it takes place in a bar. It seems Jacob is able by accident to cross over the space time barrier, and go to where these characters live, including his deceased brother.
What a cast, these ensemble members are able to weave multiple stories together to amuse the audience for 90 minutes. With a cast of seven, with a stage about the size of my kitchen, they produced a great experience. Every cast member was perfect in the role. To me, one cast member really stole the show, Connar Brown This cast member was outstanding, she did a 2-minute fight scene with 7 men, none of them were present, but you really believe she was fighting them and taking punches and being thrown around the bar. While her performance was outstanding , all of them were perfect. smoothly directed by Tony Lawry one can feel the creativity that went into the production. To do what he staged in such a small spot is always amazing.
