**** It’s last call, so to speak, at the Milwaukee Rep. Friday’s performance of And Then There Were None was the final opening night of the 2025-2026 season. An eager and engaged crowd filled the Checota Powerhouse Theater last night to enjoy Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit, and based on my ability to read And Then There Were None a room and effectively eavesdrop, I’d say folks were quite entertained.
The play is about ten people who accept an invitation to a lavish estate on a remote island, only to find themselves stranded with strangers. They soon learn that each has a secret…and are bound to perish one by one. It’s a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat — when you’re not jumping from it.
Director (and Associate Artistic Director of Milwaukee Repertory Theater) Laura Braza has a knack for magnifying the range of human emotion and experience on the stage, and she’s done it again with this talented cast. Each character is as distinct as they are complex, and their emerging and inevitably doomed relations ring true. It’s a strong ensemble. There are a few standout performances, but to say more here may spoil a bit of the narrative suspense, and I would never do that.
Suspense, of course, is the key element to making a thriller work, and building it also requires strong scenic design, meticulous lighting design, and careful sound design. The creative team of Michelle Lilly, Noele Stollmack, and Andre J Pluess make it happen by contributing their talents respectively.
And Then There Were None has suspense in spades, but also just enough levity and laughter to result in a lively show (pun intended) about murder. It will keep you gasping and guessing until the very end.
