Highly Recommended[rating=4] On last week’s radio show, we were going to do a taste test of hot dogs. Not “just” hot dogs, but Updogs made entirely of non-meat products. Yes, produced by Upton’s Naturals for the vegans who miss having that hot dog at a party, picnic or even “the big game”. It turns out, they could not deliver to the radio station as planned. I guess we were out of the territory that they deliver in. I was still curious. I am a hot dog lover. I probably know where every hot dog stand is and back in my sophmore year in High School I worked at Dann-Dee Red Hots on Devon Avenue where part of the job was enjoying hot dogs whenever. I did!
A listener sent me some info about the Updog and we made contact right away. Having a granddaughter who is a “vegan”, I wanted to know more. This afternoon I went by their food stand ( not really a hot dog stand and picked up four of the choices including the Chicago Dog. The BBQ dog is topped with grilled onions, vegan cheese and Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce.
The Pizza Dog is a grilled dog topped with vegan cheese and housemade marinara sauce.
The Elote is topped with corn salsa and vegan mayo.
Back to the Chicago Dog ( my favorite- topped with yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, onions, tomato wedges a pickle spear and optional peppers. Truly reminded me of the good old days back on Devon Avenue.
I found it hard to believe that these were “meatless”. They tasted just about as close as you can get to the grilled hot dogs of yesterday. The New York is with yellow mustard and grilled onions.

They have great french fries and I am sure they have great chili as well ( the chili on the dogs was sensational- wish I had a bowl alone).
