Highly Recommended **** Many Mexican restaurants sound familiar. Dos Amigos is a name that almost everyone thinks they have dined at- a chain or franchise opertation, but last night, we found that the Dos Amigos in Libertyville is a “one of a kind” and the food showed this to be true! The two friends that own and bring their flavorful food to the area are Sergio and Oscar. Their story is simple. They wanted the North Shore suburbs to be able to dine on the most flavorful Mexican dishes possible ( and at affordable prices).
Dos Amigos is located at the end of a strip mall in Libertville. The address is 101 West Rockland ( at Milwaukee Avenue) , just a few blocks short of Route 176 or the start of “downtown” and “Restaurant Row”. With the current situation, and dining rooms closed, this was a perfect time for us to do a curbside pick-up, take the meal home, where we were joined by our friend Marsha, and have a taste test to tell you about.
Doing it this way might be a little confusing as you will see several items on similar plates and even some of the meals as they were packaged for pick-up. I am showing these to you so you can see the terrific presentation they do even on the to-go orders. This shows that the care they give each order is the same as if you were dining in ( remember, last Spring, when we could go IN and have dinner?).
I must tell you they put together a taste test that knocked our sox off. We started off the dinner with chips and both home made salsa and wonderful Guacoamole. The ladies are big on their guac and both said they loved this item. We shared a huge bowl of Chicken Tortilla soup. It was quite flavorful and a large bowl was enough for all three of us.
The dinner selection was absolutely amazing! We enjoyed the taco salad with shrimp, that we all shared. They have a wonderful selection of salads that will please everyone in your party. And then we went on the Platillos ( entrees).
The Dos Amigos Surf and Turf: grilled rib-eye (prime) steak served with garlic shrimp, grilled veggies, rice and avocado. We know that steak can be rough to serve on a to-go order. Everyone likes their meat done to their satisfaction and “just right”. The ribeye was great and just the right touch for two of us. The other found it just a little “done”, but she enjoyed the taste and loved the shrimp and sides. The grilled corn is amazing!.
The Plato de Salmon: broiled Atlantic salmon on a bed of sauteed spinach served with rice and a medley of vegetables and mango salsa- this was as fine a salmon dish as one can expect. Even a fish specialty house would be challenged.
Cecina Tapatia: grilled beef topped with grilled onions, served with rice, beans, sliced avocado and the tasty medley. Very finely sliced beef grilled to perfection, made this a standout.
Tampiquena de Asada: grilled skirt steak ( this one was cooked medium and was perfect for all of our palates) served with a cheese enchilada, rice, chile polano, avocado, grilled onions and again the medley of veggies.
Fajitas with chicken , steak and shrimp but without the tortillas- the three meats and the tastiest of grilled onions.
Just to make sure our meal was complete, our new Amigos added for dessert: Flan, Bread pudding and a scoop of ice cream with a caramel sauce.
Tonight was a feast and leftovers for Sunday’s lunch.
The menu is full of great treats and they offer breakfast as well as a wonderful children’s menu and for the family that does not agree, they have wraps and sandwiches to please everyone.
Dos Amigos offers catering, so when you can have a party or event, know that they can handle whatever you need: whether a dinner for 6 ( many selections to choose from) ro a Burrito Fest, a Taco Bar or a Fiesta Fajitas, Oscar will handle your needs. They even offer a Margarita kit- contains all you need to do it yourself!
