Prairie Grass Cafe Reaches out to Make Themselves Accessible to Everyone!

“Sensory-Friendly Dining available here ”!  Have you ever seen this phrase?

Do we all truly understand what it even means?

To start with, there are people that are unable to handle the crowds and noise of the “dining out experience”. Can a restaurant make this available to the diners ( and their families) who NEED this experience in order to get out for a celebration, event or just a meal out with the family?

Prairie Grass Café, one of Northbrook’s finest, is making plans to prove it can be done. With the guidance of Hannah Rose Higdon, a deaf individual working in a “hearing world”, Chef Sarah Stegner will make her restaurant home to those who have steered away from this experience. One that we all take for granted.

Prairie Grass will be open to this special program, “A Sensory Friendly Restaurant every Saturday in August from 3:45 p.m. til 5:15.

They will provide an inclusive atmosphere for individuals of all ages and abilities to enjoy a meal in a relaxed and crowd-free dining room with limited contact and  number of guests being served.

This will be a safe and comfortable time for people with Autism, sensory input disorders, sensory sensitivities or other physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities along with their friends, families, and or caretakers.

Prairie Grass will give patrons a positive dining experience in a welcoming environment.

Patrons can bring “fidget objects”, noise-reducing headphones, and other sensory tools or devices. The staff has been trained to make this experience one of great positivity.

The servers will present all patrons with their checks at 5 p.m. as at 5:15 the restaurant will go back to its normal lighting and sound usage. Those that are comfortable with this can remain, those who are not can pay their bill and make sure they are not affected by the change.

Reservations are required for these Sunday experiences- call 847-205-4433

The restaurant is located in Northbrook at 601 Skokie Blvd. For more info www.prairiegrasscafe.com
