Encaustic, derived from the Greek word enkaustikos, literally means “to heat or burn in.” It is a slower, more laborious process, technically difficult to master and unlike any other medium used in 2-dimensional artwork. Timed with the spring exhibition, these encaustic works explore moments of shift—when structure loosens and new rhythms quietly take hold. The wax becomes a record of change rather than a fixed surface. “Emergence is defined as the process of coming into view or becoming exposed after being concealed, a concept that aligns the coming of spring with the actual process of creating encaustic art.” –Karen Ross
This exhibition celebrates Ross’s talents and whose connection with the Marasco on a professional and personal level offers a unique display of chosen works in Wax Poetic. The two share a belief in art’s therapeutic abilities, and work together at Art Impact Project, whose mission is to enhance emotional wellness through creative expression. Karen Ross is also a licensed psychotherapist and with her understanding of the human condition, gives her work creative and clinical perspective with an emotional and psychological impact.
Wax Poetic is an exhibit best viewed in person. The nature of encaustic co-mingles elements of painting and sculpture. To view in person is the only way to grasp the depth, surface and luminosity that no other medium can achieve. The artwork’s physical aspect is equally intriguing as their content, for example, Ross’s word paintings use small bites of conversations, thoughts and lyrics on the wood as text, visual language layers with patterns.
Karen Ross resides in Deerfield, Illinois. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland and Boston University. She is an engaged and passionate member of the artist community with affiliations with Deerpath Art League, The Art Center Highland Park, Art Makers North, North Shore Art League, Art Encounter, and Chicago Alliance of Visual Arts. Ross has also been featured in countless publications and served as a guest speaker in many artist talks.
Please Join us for the opening reception of Wax Poetic on Thursday, April 16th from 5:00-7:00 pm at The Gallery Lake Forest; 202 E. Wisconsin Ave. Lake Forest, Illinois 60045.
