***** I do not usually review movies. We are so busy with theater and restaurants that we don’t have the time to do so. Every so often, though, we do hear of something that MUST be seen, and with our membership at Wayfarer Theaters in Highland Park, we can see many more films than we might otherwise. Yesterday afternoon we took the ride up to Highland Park, got some of the best popcorn (EVER), a beverage and planted ourselves in our seats for what might be one of the best films of the year, ” The Odyssey”!
The story is about Odysseus, king of Ithaca,as he embarks on a perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War. Crossing the Mediterranean Sea with his fellow soldiers, they soon find themselves battling not only the elements, but an array of deadly obstacles and mythical creatures along the way. It is a star-studded cast with amazing photography and while we did not do the fancy I-Max version, we enjoyed a wonderful film that kept our interest from start to finish.
While it is a long film, and let’s face it, epic stories take longer to tell, the story line is amazing as we go from one period to another, leading us to the powerful ending that will raise your spirits to new heights. I for one, am glad that we were able to view this epic in a local, intimate space rather than a huge venue with people having dinners and rinks while watching a movie. I prefer popcorn and a beverage and Wayfarer is perfect for that.
I have heard that getting tickets is difficult but at Wayfarer we had no problem. While they are a sort of art film house, they also run the blockbusters, so I suggest that you make them a part of your film world. www.wayfarertheaters.com
They are located at 1850 Second Street in Highland Park. There is a garage (indoor) parking FREE ( bring your ticket to the theater for validation) and lots of dining spots steps away.
Wayfarer also has some special classic films this year. “Sunset Boulevard”, “Rear Window,” and “The Godfather” to name a few. “The Essentials” hosted by Jose Soto (Film professor at DPaul University)
