The Morton Arboretum in other than summer.

Being north-siders, we forget about the beautiful gardens and areas other than the Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe. The city people are very aware of the Garfield Park  and Lincoln Park Conservatories, but many of us lose sight about heading south of Chicago to  Lisle Illinois. There you will find The Morton Arboretum, a 1.700 acre outdoor museum. I had not been out that way for thirty plus years, until last week-end. My friend Barry and his fiancee’ Fern were set to take a ride for their exploration in photo-ops. Barry is a photographer ( hobby) and enjoys sharing with his fellow hobbyists.

One of the highlights of visiting this magnificent facility is that you can drive through the “museum” stopping at designated areas, and then walking along a path or looking at the wonderful displays. The weather plays an important part when doing an adventure such as this, so being able to drive through is an added attraction. The buildings, restaurant and coffee shop are all open every day and you can join as well. Membership benefits include free general admission and parking 365 days a year, discounts on events, classes, camps and store merchandise. BTW- Jane and Fern loved the gift shop. Being a member also gets you invited to special events and their big Arbor Day Plant Sale.

During Covid, they have mask rules ( I am happy to see that all of the visitors last Saturday obeyed this) and social distancing. There are many special events thoughout the year so it is best to check the website www.mortonarb.org.

Fall items ( besides just seeing the wonder of it all)

The visual Glass Pumpkin Patch

The Scarecrow Trail

The Illumination Tree Lights ( November 20th thru January 3rd) This is per auto as you drive along the road with new displays, light and music ( via car radio) viewing two miles among the Arboretum’s majestic trees. Tickets are on sale now and will sell out fast so go to www.mortonarb.org/illumination . You cannot purchase them on-site.

This is just a sampling of  “The Champion of Trees” also known as The Morton Arboretum. If you have never visited this wonderful experience, put it on your bucket list. If you have , but long ago, make it a ” must do”.

Here is something we saw on our visit-

These are just a sampling of some of the creativity that you will find at this wonderful part of the Chicagoland area.

We also, since we were south already decided to make a trip to a favorite place for Chili- Bishop’s. The last standing location is at 250 N. Cass Avenue in Westmont. Serving Chicago’s best chili since 1925. ( note- cash only, but worth visiting the cash station first).

Make a day of it! The Morton Arboretum is located in Lisle at 4100 Illinois Route 53 in Lisle. Phone number is 630-968-0074
