*****/***** OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!!
Forget standing on the ledge of the former Sears Tower, looking down at the streets of Chicago, or visiting Navy Pier for its latest attractions. I have experienced quite a few attractions around the city, but Friday night I discovered something that, in my opinion, takes immersive entertainment to an entirely different level. Welcome to Starstruck, the newest immersive experience to arrive in Chicago, and quite possibly one of the best.
Located at Germania Place, Starstruck is developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Fever Productions. But this isn’t your typical exhibit where you walk around looking at photographs and reading informational displays. This experience takes you out of this world and puts you right in the middle of the universe!
Once your RF headset is activated with your name and you step onto the platform, you’re suddenly transported into outer space. It takes a few minutes to find your balance and acclimate yourself to this unfamiliar environment. Then you begin to realize just how remarkable this technology really is.
The floor, walls, and even the ceiling are covered with giant QR-like codes that communicate with your headset. These codes work with the technology to create an incredibly convincing virtual environment. Before long, your surroundings disappear, and you’re floating through space.
A three-dimensional space guide takes you on an incredible journey through our solar system, exploring its beginnings, its development, and where we are today. One moment you’re traveling through the cosmos, and the next you’re walking aboard the legendary Hubble Space Telescope. You also get an opportunity to see and interact with other satellites and spacecraft that are helping scientists explore our galaxy.
What makes this experience even more fascinating is that the imagery is based on actual photographs and scientific data collected from space. You’re not simply watching science fiction unfold; you’re getting an opportunity to experience real astronomy in a way that makes the universe feel surprisingly close.
As the organizers explain, “This project demonstrates how immersive experiences can make complex scientific ideas more tangible and engaging.” I couldn’t agree more. Science suddenly becomes something you can experience rather than just read about in a textbook.
Another impressive aspect is the attention given to accessibility. Developed in close collaboration with the Smithsonian Office of Visitor Accessibility, Starstruck offers captions, visual descriptions, wheelchair-optimized viewing, assistive listening devices, complimentary companion access, and monthly low-sensory days. Trained staff and accessible facilities help make this experience welcoming to a wide range of visitors.
And speaking of staff, I have to give them some credit. The young man working the reception desk was fantastic. He took the time to explain everything, walk us through the experience, and make sure we understood what we were about to encounter. Even better, sitting right on the reception desk is an entire LEGO model of the solar system, consisting of approximately 3,000 pieces that he built himself! That’s dedication, and certainly a conversation starter.
The entire experience takes approximately an hour, including about 40 minutes inside the virtual reality environment. It’s recommended for ages 10 and older, making it an excellent outing for families, friends, and anyone with an interest in science, technology, or simply experiencing something completely different.
My recommendation? Don’t miss it!
Chicago has no shortage of attractions, but every once in a while something comes along that genuinely surprises you. Starstruck did exactly that for me. Whether you’re fascinated by astronomy or simply looking for an extraordinary experience, this is one adventure you’ll be talking about long after you take off your headset.
You don’t need to be an astronaut to explore the universe. You just need to get yourself to Germania Place! Don’t forget, for the best price, go to the Fever website
