Many of you are far too young to remember the name Lenny Bruce. Let me educate you. Lenny Bruce, was probably the first stand-up to take on the world. Yes, today when you go to a comedy club or concert the language that you hear, the bitching that you hear and the political satire is all due to this man who claims he was not a comedian…he was Lenny Bruce!”. In fact, that is the name of the show that has recently returned for its 4th incarnation, not in rep with “”Bill W. and Dr. Bob” at The Biograph ( aka Victory Gardens) theatre located at 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue.
I am pretty sure the shows has not changed ( there is no need to try and improve upon perfection) with the exception of the venue and the seating. Directed by Joe Mantegna, the show began at The Royal George Theatre on Halsted Street. It then moved on to The Venus venue on Southport and then onto Skokie at The North Shore Center for Performing Arts. You can read all three reviews right here by hitting the search and putting in Lenny Bruce ( that is all you need).
Each venue brings a little change to the blocking ad staging. Each theater has its own sight lines and seating, and I can tell you that the new home on Lincoln Avenue, in the more intimate Richard Christiansen Theatre ( upstairs) there are no bad seats, so you will see Marmo’s shining rebirth of Bruce like you have never seen before. Lenny Bruce was a hero to many comedians and performers. He spoke the truth about our country, the system. politics, drugs, sexual identity, racial tensions and of course, censorship.
You can have your chance to see marmo bring this anti-hero back to life thru April 12th
Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
