Passover dinner from Prairie Grass Cafe

[rating=5]For the last few weeks, leading up to Passover, I have mentioned that the good folks at Prairie Grass Cafe in Northbrook were offering a Passover Dinner special, both at their location, 601 N. Skokie Blvd. in Northbrook or at your home ( pick-up on day of). Over the years, our Seder ( the festival of the telling of the story of Passover) has always been at the home of a family member, but this year we were only doing one night. Prairie Grass offered to handle night two for Jane and me along with Frank ( an experience for my Catholic co-host from Skokie). I stopped by to pick up our package, brought it home and organized the goodies for Frank’s arrival.

The menu was designed for two, but there was more than enough for the three of us. In fact, it was the flourless chocolate cake where we saw that another piece would have made the dinner complete

The packages were easy to figure out and the only thing we added to the equation was gefilte fish. While it is NOT a “must”, I suppose after 75 plus years, I find it a part of the evening.

The dinner contained Matzah Ball soup ( as tasty as one might expect) and it only took about a minute to get it perfect. We also had some chopped chicken liver on matzah. I am not sure if this is a regular menu item, but I was in heaven. Many of us recall the days of Myron & Phil’s in both Lincolnwood and Northbrook. They always had a bread basket with matzah and chopped chicken livers at the table. My folks went there because of that and fell in love with the menu. Maybe Sarah will find a way to make this a staple.

With the appetizer ( the gefilte fish), then the soup, we then partook of a salad- mixed green with apples, pomegranate, pumpkin seeds and a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. A delightful and very tasty salad , indeed.

The entrée was slow braised all natural BBQ brisket ( tender and juicy), and cauliflower mash with roasted carrots.  Also, if you look closely, you will see the amazing apple kugel that was perfect and reminded me of the kugel my grandmother used to make.

For dessert, we enjoyed the flourless chocolate cake.

 

This was an amazing dinner and a solid experience. Everything was easy to reheat and prepare and everything was better than expected. Yes, better than expected, which by the way I have always found to be the case at Prairie Grass.

 

Easter is this Sunday and they can handle your Easter “brunch” as well.
