***** One of the neat features about having a membership at Wayfarer Theaters in Highland Park is that they bring in films that most venues do not. These are what some call “artsy” films or “films with a purpose”, but I must say, that most of these have been terrific, Added to the charm of the films is the open discussion after viewing the film. Sometimes, the director or writer. Other times, we get the producer, perhaps an actor, but tonight, we were treated to the Director, two of the producers, and two of the actors as we watched “Cast Aside The Clouds”, an amazing film ( 2 hours and 5 minutes) that shows Iran in a way we have never seen before.
Chicagoans have driven along Shridan Road in Wilmette and seen the Bahai Temple, but how many have ever entered this wonderful building? In fact, how many are familiar with the bahai religion, or its beliefs? Most peole who have stopped by, see the beauty in the building and its grounds, but there is a great deal more. Established in 19th centrury Persia, Bahai is an independent global religion that teaches the oneness of God, the unity of humanity, and the essential harmony of all major world religions. It explicity stresses rejection of racism, sexism, and prejudice.
The religion began in Iran and parts of western Asia, where it has faced ongoing persecution. This film tells the story of what happens when a young woman ( who is Bahai) falls in love with a young man( who is NOT Bahai) and what happens to their romance, their families and the people in their lives. The story is a story, but based on actual incidents appears to be quite factual and real. During our “talk Back” one of the actors shared with us his family history which motivated him to do the film, playing the faher of the heroine, who owned a book store that sold Bahai books.
The film is spellbinding, educational, romantic, sad, happy and just about every emotion one can feel. Our world is unique in that we can be fighting a war with Iran, one that has been ongoing through several presidents, and yet, we can view a story like this and find compassion for the people who have been persacuted by their own people for reasons that are faith. This is a film that MUST BE SEEN!
