“Old Fashioned Magic: Ryan Plunkett” reviewed by Frank Meccia

**** If you’re looking for a night of wonder, laughter, and old-school charm, look no further than Ryan Plunkett, the Old Fashioned Magician, now appearing every Wednesday night at the Chicago Magic Lounge. With a title that reflects his classic style and flair, Ryan brings a touch of vintage magic into the modern era, all while keeping audiences completely captivated.

Plunkett is no newcomer to the world of illusion. He’s performed at some of the most revered venues in magic, including  The House of Cards in Nashville, the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood , and a stunning performance at Speakeasy Magic in New York City. These prestigious bookings are no small feat and are a testament to his artistry, charisma, and technical skill.

At the Chicago Magic Lounge—an art deco dream tucked behind the facade of a laundromat on Clark Street—Plunkett shines as both a close-up performer and stage magician. From the moment he walks on stage, Ryan is in complete control of the room. His rapid-fire patter, endless charm, and non-stop sleight of hand leave no room for distraction. The audience becomes part of the show as Ryan pulls up willing “victims” to participate in his illusions, often walking away stunned, baffled, and laughing.

Plunkett is more than a magician—he’s a mentalist, too. Throughout the show, he seemingly reads minds, predicts choices, and uncovers hidden thoughts with uncanny accuracy. Even the most skeptical audience members can’t help but lean in, asking, “How does he do that?” For one hour, you’re glued to your seat, caught in a web of mystery and old-fashioned showmanship.

After the main stage show, Plunkett often moves to more intimate one-on-one magic, where guests can watch his card tricks and illusions from just inches away. He also sells specialty decks and magic cards—perfect souvenirs for those wanting a piece of the magic to take home.
But the magic doesn’t stop with Ryan. The Chicago Magic Lounge itself is an experience all on its own. From the secret entrance through a laundromat to the elegant, 1930s-style speakeasy interior, the venue offers an immersive escape into the golden age of magic. The bar serves cleverly themed cocktails—be sure to try The Houdini—and the small-plate menu is perfect for sharing. The prime rib sliders, hummus platter, and crispy fries are just the right kind of snack to pair with spellbinding entertainment.

While Ryan Plunkett headlines every Wednesday( thru September 24th), the Lounge features a rotating cast of local and visiting magicians seven days a week. It’s one of Chicago’s most unique nightlife experiences, and tickets go fast.
