[rating=3] John Leguizamo is a funny man! His new work, “Latin History for Morons”, now on the road and on the stage of The Cadillac Palace Theatre is an amazing powerful two hours of pure energy ( no intermission) that will have you laughing your A _ _ off!
This is a one man show where our star ( and author) is about to teach his audience the actual history of the United States including the Latinos who evidently were left out of all the history text books that are used in the American school system
When his son’s school project was to find a hero, Leguizamo seeks to find the Latino hero for him.
What we have is a search that begins with Columbus ( an Italian, working for Spain); the Aztec Empire, and then the stories of the “unknown” Latin heroes of all of the wars that America has been associated including the Revolutionary war. The energetic Leguizamo takes on many characters ( his family, his shrink, his son’s headmaster, his son’s arch enemy’s father) to bring us a look at parenting when one is trying to impress their offspring with the knowledge that despite what we hear in today’s world, The Latin population is ( and always has been ) important to their country.
In reality, “what defines a true American?” “Who has the right to be here?” ( not according to our present President, but in reality, based on history). This is a clever piece that may work better in a smaller venue ( they had to add a screen so the people in the back seats and above would be able to watch the expressions of this powerful comedian. While I like him, and enjoyed what he had to say, I truly feel that a smaller venue and about 25 minutes shaved off might tighten the show and make it more appealing. I know that he has a lot to say, but I think many would have preferred a little less than they got.
