[rating=4]After several weeks of serious plays and drama, it’s fun sometimes to sit down for 90 minutes and let yourself go with a fun good-humored playful musical. And in the month of June which is Pride month nobody else comes to mind then David Zak’s Pride Arts Center on Broadway. Grindr The Opera is based on the book and lyrics of Erik Ransom and won the Off-West End Award in London for 2019. The play is directed by John Cardone, who just finished his run in the Full Monty at Theo Ubique, and has been in hits such as Grand Hotel, Guys and Dolls, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
It’s amazing! He can direct, sing, act, and dance and is reprising the role of Don, the uptight married senator.” Grindr The Opera”puts the notorious gay hook up on stage in an opera musical style ranging from baroque to contemporary. I was captivated by the voice of Bruno Rivera, who plays Grindr, he is the “Discovery of the Year 2018” by Chicago Vocal Arts. His voice is pitch perfect, and he is ready for the big stage in opera. His costuming was so entertaining and with that voice made for a perfect show. The two main character’s , Tom played by Ben Broughton and Devon played by Justin Cavazos are the new generation of Gay relationships who believe that you can find love on the new medium of “App Dating”, and yet learn the pitfalls that most of us have learned in the last 20 years with web based dating apps.
Thou, this opera is called a parody, it touches some very serious issues that all of us have had to deal with in the dating world. And it touches some very serious issues that exist in the gay community and the easy acceptance of fast sex vs romance.
