[rating=5]Life is full or ups and downs. “Enough to Let the Light In” is a riveting psychological thriller about girlfriends Marc ( Melissa DuPrey) and Cynthia (Lisandra Tena ), who start an evening together celebrating a milestone. It is a night of excitement for these two ladies. This is the first time that Cynthia has invited Marc into her home and one can feel the tensions as the two begin to express their feelings in ways they have never done before. Sharply directed by Georgette Verdin “Enough To Let The Light In” is set in a house ( the set by Sotirios Livaditis is amazing) that has some strange sounds to it and there is a closet door that always is ajar. Cynthia is not upfront about the mysteries surrounding her home and later we find out this is also true about her past.
During the course of the evening, as the ladies express their feelings, Marc takes us to a new level by proposing marriage. One can feel the excitement and the love in the room, but as quick as we feel that, things happen that make us take a step back and re-examine,. A Painting falls off the wall- explainable? Footsteps abound in the rooms thta we don’t see! A toy fire truck appears in one area of the house and then later is found in another- and only the two of them are there!
Marc becomes nervous. Cynthia wants to play games. She suggests a game called two truths and a lie, where each of them make three statements ( 2 true/1 a lie) and the other has to guess which is which. Each lady does this and we find that there are some new questions that arise. Later Marc finds some other evidence of things that she was unaware of and the story shifts. Seeing as this is a mystery and the answers will come out as the story progresses, I will honor the writer Paloma Nozicka by saying no more. I will say that the suspense is powerful and the ending will leave you breathless. While the trip has some ups and downs, the ride is worth it! Two excellent performances and character studies.
These two actresses are absolutely amazing and I foresee a Jeff nomination for this one. By the way, the tech is terrific. Emma Deane’s lighting , Stefanie M. Senio’s sound and Lonnae Hickman’s props along with the costumes ( Gregory Graham) the only male on the list shows that this company Teatro Vista cares about its women and they show their power in this brilliant World Premiere which will be onstage in the Steppenwolf 1700 Theater ( one of the finest Black Box venues in Chicago) Thru – Oct 23, with performances as follows:
