***** At The Whale, we are all about exceptional service. Whether you are looking for outdoor dining, outdoor bars, or just cocktails, you will feel like a high roller.
When one thinks “The Whale!” what are we truly thinking? Logan Square? Fish? Well guess what? How about a fun place to dine, very near to the downtown action and near the Kennedy, so close to home, but with pricing that will make your wallet feel good about a night on the town!
Loagn Square is a neighborhood that has seen many changes. Milwaukee Avenue has been rerouted at Logan Blvd, or make an easier drive, and parking may be a nightmare, there is a spot that you need to know about- that spot is “The Whale”, located on Milwaukee Avenue at 2427 N. Milwaukee Avenue ( just a half block north of Fullerton). The GM there is an old froend who has been in te restaurant business for many years. He alerted us to this venue and invited us to see what they offer, and lo and behold, we found this to be a gem hidden in an area that most people stay away from— as Mr. T. might say ” I pity those fools!”.
Jane, Frank and I met there for an amazing dining experience. It was also Jane’s birthday, and GM Justin Torres made sure that we had a birthday celebration as part of the evening.
Jane and Frank enjoyed one of the many wines they have on their wine list, while I had my usual Vodka Martini, very dry, straight up, with a rocks glass on the side. This was done to perfection, and while it might seem “petty” is shows just how customer service orientated a space is when they get it right ( twice)!
We began our evening with some of their appetizers:
Lobster Tacos-(mango salsa, lime crema) delicious and Bacon Deviled Eggs ( brown sugar, Applewood bacon, tarragon and chives ( delish)and some amazing oysters- wow!

For our three entree’s, the Branzini, ahi tuna and some pretty amazing Fried Chicken with an awesome side of Mac n’ cheese ( worth the trip just for the Mac n’ cheese). The fried chicken is boneless and the mac n’ cheese divine. The Osso Buco is a classic Italian dish of veal shanks with veggies- very tender and even our Italian ( Frank) said “nothing better- ever! the last main dish was the Tuna Tiradito which came with the appetizers, but stayed with the main dishes as it was too good to let Frank take home to his family ( it was amazing!) it is sashimi ahi tuna, avocado, lime, soy aji Amarillo, jalapeno, cilantro and sesame ( yum!).
The food was absolutely amazing ( the portions were “family Friendly- sharing works here)
To finish the dinner up, and since it was a birthday ( jane’s) celebration, they brought out two of their desserts’
Carrot Cake (walnut, orange zest, with a cream cheese frosting) and Parrish Pie ( cookie butter cream cheese, spiced butter, whipped cream and honey)- delish!
I must tell you that it was a dining experience that far exceeded my expectations. Here we were in Logan Square, on Milwaukee Avenue, dining on a meal that might be anticipated on Rush Street or Michigan Avenue, but at prices that are far more Logan Square. The only negative to this experience is finding parking, but once you do, you will be delighted with finding this spot in the Logan Square neighborhood! You can valet park!
