***** It has been many years since I visited Popeye’s on Lake Geneva. This is not the Popeye’s that does fried chicken that is on almost every major corner in the states, but a unique dining spot that overlooks Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.
Today was a beautiful top-down day in the Greater Chicago area, so Janie and I hopped in the car ( after watching our granddaughter’s softball team triumph in a softball game) and headed north. We thought about re-visiting Antioch or perhaps Fox Lake, but the drive was so nice, we just kept going until we were over the border and on our way to Lake Geneva.
We got to town and while Jane shopped around, I walked over to the the restaurant that is known for great food and service and has been a mainstay for decades. They do not take reservations, but when I explained that Janie had never experienced their meals, they made sure we got a table facing the lake, so we could watch the activity as we enjoyed our dinner.
We opted for one of their appetizers- the rotisserie chicken nachos supreme: pulled rotisserie chicken, marinated tomatoes, green onions, in house shredded cheddar jack cheese on freshly made corn tortilla chips- they were magnificent and quite filling.
In fact, we decided to share one of their renowned sandwiches, the OMG Burger ( for” “Oh My God”, and it was !) Half Pound steak burger grilled to perfection with slices of three cheeses ( Swiss, Cheddar and American), roasted red pepper, hickory smoked bacon, grilled mushrooms and onions on a toasted bun. By the way, the fries were amazing!
Splitting the burger was genius on our part as the combo made for a perfect dinner for the two of us. I will also tell you that the memory of the dining experience at Popeye’s is one that will last for a long time. I know that I will not wait 40 years again. I think we will make trips to Lake Geneva often
