When it comes to pan pizza, Chicago is known for Unos, Dues, Giordanos, Lou Malnati’s and the list goes on and on. Recently we became aware of the magic of a Morton Grove Pizzeria called Pequod’s Pizza. They have been there for generations and somehow, with all my running around I never went to this spot that has been in Morton Grove for eons. Their “pan Pizza” is different from all the others. The crust is caramelized cheese and is powerful. The taste is amazing and makes this the best pan pizza in Chicago ( my opinion).
If the dining spot itself had more to offer this probably would be a five star review, but four is Highly Recommended and that is what I am doing.
We arrived , found a parking place ( on the street parking is available in Morton Grove) and entered into this old building that has almost the feeling of a log cabin that was there before the houses surrounding it were built. The dining room is fairly small and was very crowded. Our table was ready for us and we were educated a bit on how Pequod’s works. At each table there is a landing board so that when the pizza comes from the oven the oilcloth table covers ( yes, they still have these- my grandmother had checkered ones, their are solid).
It was Jane, Alan, Vicki and me so we did a house salad that was large enough for all four.
We skipped the appetizers ( they have a decent selection of basic starters, and we skipped the pasta dishes and sandwiches’. They are known for their pizza so why not go full out Pizza?
We ordered two pan pizzas- one was vegetable and Sausage and the other was half sausage and half hamburger- they were medium and enough to have leftovers. Jane wanted more crust and Vicki thought it would be cool to have a side order of crust, but they were both dreaming. I will say that the crust is absolutely amazing! We will be back for more.
As I said, since we are doing a story I wanted to do the thin pizza as well. While it did not have the caramelized crust, it does have a great crunch to it. On this one, we did half sausage and the other half cheese and black olives. This was done to perfection and just may have altered my thinking on the best of the thin pizzas for me.
Pequod’s Pizza is located in Morton Grove at 8520 Fernald ( just South of Dempster and very near to Lincoln Avenue as it heads into Skokie. The space is very close to the Edens expressway as well. The phone number is 847-470-9161 and the website is www.pequodspizza.com
They have another location in Chicago at 2207 N. Clybourn- call 773-327-1512
They do delivery and online orders are welcome. If you are familiar with Pequod’s and haven’t been there for a while, now is a great time to get back on board- they are terrific people with a great product. If you have never tried this amazing pan pizza, you owe it to yourself and your family to take them on an adventure. You will thank me!
