[rating=4] About two years ago, we went to a restaurant in Deer Park for a review. The name was Tacos Guanajuato and it was a darling spot with a great menu. I might call it a fast food type ofbuilding but with authentic Mexican food. I thought they had a sister restaurant on the North Shore and now, with the pandemic almost behind us, we were informed that this was the case. A little fancier dining spot in Winnetka ( very close to the Glencoe border) on Green Bay Road, called Guanajuato.
The building is special and has a great deal of outside seating. They have some great heat lamps extending their patio season and to be honest with the weather we are having, they could use the patio into the month of November easily. Jane, Frank and I did dine indoors and our server Sara helped us with all of the wonderful items on the very extensive menu. We never do Mexican without doing Guacamole ( they offer creamy or spicy/we opted creamy) and they serve with Jicama & cucumber as well as wonderful chips. They have many ceviche’s on their menu so every taste can be pleased. They also have some amazing looking salads and while I did not try it, watching the table next to us savor the Tortilla soup made me see that next time, this is on my order.
Our second appetizer was the Salsalita Tamales ( two chicken, pork or sweet corn tamales in a mole salsa. We had the pork with sweet corn- wow! flavors to savor for sure!
For the entrees, we selected three: Chipolte Salmon- salmon and shrimp in a creamy chipotle sauce served on a bed of spinach, tomatoes, mushroom, broccoli and asparagus ( I did eat veggies tonight)., The Grilled Avocado and Shrimp ( lightly grilled avocado filled with fresh shrimp cocktail mixing the flavors served with assorted veggies and Mexican rice and last , but not least, El Molcajete ( chicken ,grilled cactus, onions, black beans, and salsa simmered slowly to bring out all the flavors garnished with choices of steak, shrimp and chicken. all or none- we had them all.
The menu has so much more. If we come back 8 times and do three different items each time, we will get to taste them all. I must tell you that the drinks were also made to perfection. Most of you know that I am a vodka drinker, or maybe a Manhattan or old Fashion, BUT if dining Mexican I went Margarita and Jane and Frank did the same. I had salt on my glass rim while they did not. It was the perfect beverage for this dinner. The flavors of the dishes were wonderful. The presentations were picture book. In fact, Frank was hesitant to serve as the picture would be destroyed, but serve he did and we all shared the glorious flavors of Mexico (without the travel).
After dinner, Frank and I had a cup of coffee and we all shared a beautiful Tres Leches Cake. With my birthday coming this week-end the only thing missing were the candles, but that many candles would have been far too hot for this wonderful restaurant on Green Bay. FYI-They also have Flan, Helado Frito nd Churros Con Nieve.
Again, the restaurant is Guanajuato located at 100 Green Bay Road in Winnetka. (Hubbard Woods)
