[rating=5] A few weeks ago, we visited a well known pizza parlor/restaurant in Morton Grove called Pequod’s. It was Al , Vicki, Jane and I and we had been informed that their caramelized crust was “to die for”. I wrote about it here and of course spoke about the experience on the radio show ( wcpt820 Sundays 2-3 p.m.). Those who heard and read the story know that we were enthralled by the crunch of the crust and the way they caramelize the edges- it was amazing and left us wanting more!
After talking about this experience, I received many text messages as well as e-mails from readers and listeners telling me about a few spots in the northern burbs, Lefty’s Pizza Kitchen- “home of the caramelized crust”. They have two locations- Wilmette and Highland Park.
The Wilmette location is at 1156 Central Avenue 847-920-5401
Highland Park location is 600 Central Avenue 847-926-7194
The four of us went to the Highland Park location this evening. The owner, John was unavailable but his son made sure that we were able to dine on their pizza as well as a salad to get us started. While they offer both thin and pan pizza, since it was the crust that was of importance, we opted for the pan. We ordered one that was cheese/sausage and tomatoes/ the other cheese, black olives and mushrooms and onion- BOTH were great and I must tell you the crust is probably the best I have ever tasted. Not only is the edge caramelized, but the entire crust is crunchy and a delight to the taste buds.
As it turns out, at one time, John was the owner of the “other” pizza parlor and after he sold it and did some other ventures he decided to go back to the Pizza parlor and went a little bit further with his crust. He has found a perfect blend of crust and ingredients. All four of us were in “heaven” enjoying each bite and waiting for the next one. I will tell you that this pizza is quite filling, so order with your logic, not your eyes.
They offer 4 sizes of “pan”- the small (10″) or medium (12″) can handle 4 people unless you are ravenous or planning to have some as leftovers. They have a 14″ and 16″ as well. FYI They do have sandwiches and salads and soft drinks. There is indoor seating in Highland Park as well as some patio seating ( with a roof) and a view of downtown Highland Park.
