The menu is vast. Pages and pages of items to choose from. I find that when I see a menu that huge it is best to order the items that are featured and that are the ones for which they are best known . Let’s face it. I am telling you, my readers what they have and what they have featured for years, so why not share the items that are the most popular?
We began our dinner with The China Chef Combination Appetizers: egg rolls, ribs, fried shrimp beef satay and crab rangoon. The egg rolls were as good as I have ever had. Jane and Shari had been speaking about another Chinese restaurant they were at last week and both said that these egg rolls were far superior to those. I found myself thinking about The Pekin House on Devon Avenue. These were that good!!
We also had a bowl of Won Ton Soup ( delicious and quite flavorful).
The dishes that were brought filled our table. By the way, when we came in Jane asked why they did not give us a small square table. The reason is simple, we could never have fit all these dishes on a small table- the huge circular table worked to perfection.
We were served the following items:
Cashew Chicken
General Tso’s Chicken ( a little spicy, but not as powerful as one might anticipate)
Mongolian Beef ( a house specialty)
Shrimp Kow with vegetables
House combo fried rice
FILIPINO- Pancit Guisado: Cantonese noodles, shrimp, tenderloin pork and Chinese veggies. a delicious treat for sure!.
The menu is designed for family dining with small and large portions on most items.
They also have an enormous lunch-carry out menu with most items at $6.95 and $7.95 Monday-Saturday from 11 am-3:30 p.m.
THEY ARE CLOSED TUESDAYS
Their hours are daily 11 a.m.- 9 p.m. ( again, except Tuesday)
They also have a party room and can do banquets for parties and events.
China Chef is off the “beaten path” in town, but is worth finding. It is a town treasure located at 5920 West Lincoln Avenue ( just east of Austin Avenue) south of Dempster and they have plenty of free parking.
The phone number is 847-967-6050
website www.chinachef.org ( order online and check delivery area service)
Based on our experience, I know we will be going back again ( and again). There are so many items that we want to try.
I also have to say the service is of the highest quality I have experienced in this post pandemic era. It felt as if everyone was happy to be there and after we settled in with a drink ( old fashion for me- tea for the ladies), the evening was ready to start and the staff at China Chef made sure that we had an experience that we will treasure.
When you enter the lobby you will see an aquarium- take a look at the fish in there. They are amazing. Ask the host or hostess about these fish and get the story.
