Recommended *** Fast food is here to stay. Our lifestyles, even having had over a year of covid-19 existence, is far to face-paced for sit down meals. During this crazy time we have also learned that the “food Truck” is a valuable asset. I have seen caterers use food trucks during Covid for wedding and bar/bat Mitzvah parties, and I myself have discovered some of the great meals available from these restaurants on wheels. As I have done my research, I have also been fortunate that many of my readers and listeners to my radio show on WCPT every Sunday ( from 2-3 p.m. on 820 am) have told me about more.
My love for the hamburger is one that cannot be missed. I love a good burger and even more a great one. One of my listeners told me about a company called Big Mouth Steak and Subs and the food truck that they had. Unlike many others, there truck is in reality a trailer that they bring to a location, mostly for catering, and then come back and get later. They do not move around during the day. In May, they decided to make their starting point a kitchen where they could also have a dining room, bringing their kitchen and their menu to the people of the community, where there was a need. They found a spot. Craig and Letasha share a passion for bringing delight to their neighbors by offering them healthy alternatives to “fast food” with the freshest of ingredients, the sauces that will enhance the flavors and prices that are “family friendly”.
The location is on the small side, with four tables and a few stools, but Craig is fixing to add some outside tables and chairs to add some comfort to the seating. While the outdoor seating will not be as comfortable as the “comfort food”, this is a neighborhood spot where most of the people can just order, pick up and dine with their family or friends at home.
Jane and I stopped by at lunch time after watching a grueling softball game where our granddaughter’s team trounced their opposition. We were on our way to the Lincoln Park Art Festival, but ended up rained out ( at least for us).
We ordered three of the best known items on their menu- The Cheeseteak called, of course, THE BIG Cheesesteak ( The BIG WAY is the best way, in my book)- also available in chicken, is a delightful experience. It beats the pants off of any other Philly Steak Sandwich in the area. The sauces are a perfect mixture, allowing the juices to flow evenly with every bite ( and there are a lot of bites). We got the small!
The second sandwich was a BIG Sub called The Hungry Man ( again, this is the small) we had a great combination of meats and veggies along with their special ingredients except Jane doesn’t like pepperoni- it was delicious.
For our third item, it had to be the burger ( I love my burgers)- We had the BIG DADDY- this is one pound of beef piled high with a choice of cheeses and lettuce and tomatoes. Craig is thinking of putting many men to the test of eating one of these within a time period and offering a contest. I think it would be fun to cover this event. This is one burger that will have you deciding just how to start the attack, but once you taste the burger you will know that Craig and his staff are doing the food the way they would for their own family- as I said earlier, they are part of the neighborhood, and want to have that neighborly feeling when you dine -in, pick up or have delivered ( or even if you are having a party).
They also have smaller burgers, hot dogs, Polish sausages, several chicken dishes and of course a salad. They even have cheesecake for that sweet ending. By the way, the fries are great and you can load them in different ways. Hey, Chiili lovers. There is a BIG Chilli waiting for you and on my next visit, perhaps on a day where it is not 96 degrees, that is what I plan to enjoy.
