For those who are gamblers and visit casinos, there is a new “player” in town. The American Place Casino is in Waukegan on Fountain Square ( this is the old Lakehurst site, and it is booming). We have stopped by to dine in their fabulous restaurants, attended some of the comedy shows and of course, done a little slot playing. Right now, they are in what is termed a “temporary” space and soon they will break ground for the real thing which will feature lots of amenities. (It’s like bringing Vegas to Waukegan)
One of their dining spots is called L’Americain, an American bistro with French accents, and a place where every meal is made from scratch. They have a very complete menu and last night, Jane and I went there to taste some of the new items they have added. These included four breakfast items, a few shareables, four entree’s ( sandwiches & plates) and two desserts. We also tried a vanilla milk shake ( a true taste delight for both of us- one that we have not had since dieting-wow!).
We tried both of the new shareable items, buffalo Chicken Dip w/focaccia toast: I will tell you that this was a zesty flavor, but was also quite tasty. We did some cross dining by dipping the Bavarian pretzel stick ( from their Beer-Braised Brat & pretzel board, to add to the fun. The brats were delish- simmered in lager and onions and a spicy mustard truly added to the charm ( and flavor).
While they have added 4 breakfast items, there was no way we could try them all so we opted for the Chicago Beef Benedict ( served with hash browns, this shaved italian beef with mozzarella, giardiniera and a wonderful hollandaise sauce was yummy. The second one was the Chilaquiles Verdes: crispy corn tortillas tossed in a roasted tomatillo salsa, topped with two eggs ( we did over easy), cotija cheese, avocado, crema and cilantro. This was not as spics as anticipated and in some ways reminded us of something we will be dining on very soon ( Passover is right around the corner), known as “Fried Matzos”!

From the plates, we skipped the actual sandwiches ( a Truffle Mushroom Burger and a Fried Chicken Sandwich) and selected the Harbor Fish Tacos : beer-battered cod ( or blackened Mahi) served with warm flour tortillas, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, avocado & chipotle-lime crème. This was amazing!
The last entree, and my favorite of all was the BBQ Brisket with Mac N’ Cheese: burnt ends, scallions, crispy onions and BBQ sauce over some terrific Mac N’ Cheese. To Die For!!
The two new desserts: pineapple upside down cake ( charred pineapple coulis, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry) and the sweet bites , mini cheesecake and brownie bites – the perfect ending to our tasting, then off to the slots. These are just the new additions to a menu that should find something for everyone in your party.
