This morning, we were invited to take a peek at the new musical, “Paradise Square” at The Nederlander Theatre ( formerly the Oriental a/k/a as The Ford Oriental) on Randolph Street. This is the show that will have it’s pre-Broadway try-outs starting November 2nd and running until December 5th. The press began arriving at 9:30 a.m.. We had to show all of our completion of vaccinations and a negative Covid test. I took my test at the theatre and then was allowed to sit at the back while waiting for the 15 minutes result ( NEGATIVE).
While waiting, I looked at the empty stage ( always a single bulb lamp on a bare stage known as “the ghost light”) and from the floors below, I could hear the voices of the cast warming up. Our guides from Broadway In Chicago took us down two levels to the rehearsal room where the presentation took place. It was great to see many of my theater world friends, who I had not seen in awhile. All the media was represented as this is a BIG SHOW.
We were introduced to producer, Garth H. Drabinsky who talked about the show from concept to reality, introducing us to the amazing people that are making this possible. When sitting in an audience, most people have no idea as to how a story gets told, and the work that it takes to take a play from idea to “Opening Night”
We then were able to watch this powerful cast do five numbers from the show ( by the way, they have just begun the process) and most of us were in awe. The powerful music and lyrics will blow you away.
The story takes place in New York circa 1863.
The country is divided over immigration, racial tensions and politics ( sound familiar?).
Five Points is a slum ( the worst of the worst) inhabited by Irish Immigrants and Blacks who escaped slavery, the world is different. They live, work and love each other. They intermarry and they also create music and dance. A new culture is created along with a dance that is now called “tap”.
I will tell you that I found the dance number amazing and powerful. The songs beautiful and great story relating. I am so looking forward to the opening. I suggest that if you want to be a part of history, you get your tickets as soon as possible.
The show will open November 2nd at The James Nederlander Theatre located at 24 West Randolph Street.
