This show was a compilation of 3 choreographers’ works. All 3 are African-American male choreographers, and all 3 pieces were performed in the lyrical/modern genre, with a 15-minute intermission between each presentation.
The Windless Hold, by Choreographer Osnel Delgado, is a fluid dance, costumed in a maroon velour, with excellent use of lighting, illuminating patterns on the floor. The dancers portrayed a sense of oneness, as they intertwined on stage, all with excellent technique.
Love Infinite, by Chicago Choreographer Randy Duncan, gave vibes that uplifted the spirit, as the dancers used spins and lifts, exuding a celebration of love in all forms. Some of the moves on stage reminded me of the gazelles in The Lion King, as these dancers soared through the air, with the use of African movement and rhythm, along with beautifully orchestrated music, and parts to poetic word. We were swept away as the full awakening of the spirit manifested into infinite love.
Dichotomy of a Journey, by Choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie, combined fluid movement with rigid moves as the dancers performed in all white. There was a lot of leaning and connection in this piece, with the final piece culminating into a heartfelt Gospel portrayal, with a lot of white light, and following the spirit above.
I take this quote from the choreographer himself: “From this moment and beyond, may we continue to live with vitality, connection, vision, community, and most importantly, self-encouragement”.
The audience gave a well-deserved standing ovation.
