CHICAGO’S MOST DAREDEVIL SUPPER CLOSET TURNS INTO A GRAND, SOPHISTICATED STAGE- Kit Kat

****Velcome! Welcome! Welcome! That is what opening the door felt like. As we entered the new and exciting Kit Kat Club on Halsted, we felt very welcome indeed. Jane and I, along with our friends Alan and Vickie wanted to feel the energy of the opening of the renewed Kit Kat Club, so we made a reservation so that we could sample the food, the drinks and of course the entertainment. If you have never been to a “Drag Show”, you have no idea as to what you have been missing.

In Chicago’s nightlife tapestry, few places combine cuisine, cabaret, drag, and camp with such sustained excellence. Kit Kat was always more than dinner and show; it was sanctuary and spectacle. Its relocation and re-launch doesn’t just fill a void—it raises the bar for what a supper club can, and should, be.

Spectacular design, bold food, sharper cocktails, drag, dance, and drama. Bring your appetite. Bring your sense of wonder.

Kit Kat Club, re-located to 3524 N. Halsted Street, in Chicago (773-525-1111). The “club” re-emerged as a beautiful, luxurious restaurant and nightclub that retains the excitement and sophistication of its earlier incarnation, but in a much bigger space that showcases a gorgeous Deco décor and immense, wrap-around video screens that immerse guests in dramatic moving imagery. The food and beverage offerings have been re-imagined with more style and deliciousness. The entertainment has also been expanded to include a variety of musical and theatrical performances on the weekdays as well as the famous drag shows on the weekends.

Our evening was off to a start as we opened the door and entered. The sounds of the dance and the laughter and happiness of the room were immediately felt. We all know that the world is topsy turvy right now, but inside the Kit Kat Club ( as we all recall from a club with the same name in the musical “Cabaret”, “everyone is happy!”. While we did not see an Emcee, we heard a voice and saw one of the dancers doing “their” thing

As we were escorted to our table, walking through this brightly, high fashioned “club”, we noticed dollar bills on the floor. One of the things one must bring to a showplace like this is plenty of singles, as during the course of our experience, we were witness to several dance numbers by I think two performers. I am sure that as the time goes on, there will be many more finding themselves onstage at the Kit Kat Club.

Our server, Chance came by quickly and explained that while we scanned the menu, it might be wise to place our drink order as with it being first night and a full house, the bar might be backed up a bit. We did just that. note: after driving for over an hour on the highway-Friday night, we all deserved a drink! The menu is divided into two pages, one is the appetizers and dinners, the other their weekend Brunch Menu. Vickie and I ordered our Martinis, Alan and Jane went with a glass of wine ( Chardonnay).

The food items we selected were the calamari ( grilled to perfection and quite tasty), the Butternut Squash Ravioli ( a presentation that appeared to pretty to eat, but was quite tasty), Grilled Chicken Skewers ( another beautiful presentation- juicy and tender), pan seared scallops and last but not least, my favorite menu item truffle Mac N’ Cheese. Some of the appetizer items can be ordered as dinners as well. The ladies at the table next to ours all ordered the house specialty- the Kit Kat Brie Burger, which looked terrific ( and sorry to say,a lot of calories.

They do not have a dessert selection yet, and their coffee system was not ready for operation, but Chance made a special drink for me called a “screwball” which is composed of vodka and Jamosen, which had the flavor and taste of coffee. I will  remember that one and stock my home bar with Jamo. The evening was fun and while they had some ups and downs, it was their first night with a full house, so all is forgiven and they appeared to overcome any and all situations.

If you used to visit the old Kit Kat Club, I think you will find the new club an even better experience. Ifg you have never had the experience of a “Drag Show”, maybe it is time to leave your troubles at the door, and visit this one.
