[rating=4]For several seasons, I have been witness to some great young talent being showcased by Lauren Berman’s 4 Chairs Theatre Company in Highwood. They , under normal circumstances, do their Cabaret performances in Arlington Heights at the intimate Hey Nonny ( Downtown Arlington Heights). Due to our world being on “shut-down” mode, they have had to find other ways of bringing their music to us and the internet has been an effective way to do so. You-Tube works and this time, they have joined with Circles & Cyphers (visit www.circles&cyphers.org) to add a little different flavor.
The above listed organization is one with inner-city roots and has been a great addition to the world of arts in the city. The young people involved are reaching out to the community through arts rather than fighting and what we see during this show is a mixture of the suburban singers and dancers along with the dancers, singers and rappers of the city. It is a joint effort to spread love through music and at the same time help this organization raise some funds to expand their programs and help even more young people.
While there are some of the usual performers that Ms Berman uses ( Emmie Ginsberg, Anthony J. De Pew, Kaitlin Feely and Alyson Low) there were a number of new talents and I know that it is not easy to do a solo in your room , but the majority of these young talents are able to do this as if they were on the stage looking right into your eyes. This is how it would be at Hey Nonny and I am in hopes that very soon, we will enter the phase where we can view a performance IN a Cabaret, rather than on our computers.
The dance numbers are interspersed throughout the program ( roughly 90 minutes). The mix of music is wonderful with music of Paul McCartney (Eagles), Simon & Garfunkle ( Bridge Over Troubled Water), John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Demi Lovato and a killer Rap number dealing with Black History. Unfortunately, this was a one time show, but I am sure there will be others and will keep you advised on my radio show as well WCPT820 am on Sundays at 2 p.m.-3 p.m.
