[rating=5]Last night we went to Waukegan to relive memories of American Idol winner Ruben Stoddard and Clay Aiken as they presented “Twenty Years, One Night”, a two-hour concert that truly shows off the talent they possess. The Genesee Theatre brings touring shows in on a regular basis. Almost every show is a one-nighter, so if you look at their schedule, www.geneseetheatre.com, and find one you want to see, I suggest you order your seats immediately.
If you have never been to this gloriously restored treasure, you are missing out. The facility is a wonder that has been brought back to life and over the years appears to get even better. There are no bad seats and the acoustics are amazing. In fact, they could have lowered the amplifiers last night and it might have been even more enjoyable. For those not familiar with the two stars of this show, one must go back in time to The American Idol tv show, season two. Ruben Stoddard was the winner and while Clay Aiken is loaded with talent, he was eliminated.
Since then, some 20 years ago, they have both had success in the entertainment field and now are making a trip through America bringing their show, “Together and Invisible” to mark Twenty Years- One Night, as they tell us about their experience, the judges they liked working with, anecdotes of their week to week experiences and play well off each other.
Both are in fine voice and it almost appears that Aiken’s range has grown even more. He does a rendition of “Unchained Melody” that will send goosebumps up your spine and this number alone is worth the price of admission. He also does a tribute to Barry Manilow that will amaze you.
It has been awhile since our last visit to this glorious theater located at 203 N. Genesee Street, and now that we have seen what is happening, I am sure we will be returning soon. In fact, “The Beach Boys” will be bringing “Fun,Fun, Fun” to Waukegan on June 2nd and I know that I will want to “get around” to see and hear the music of the 60’s.
While there are not a lot of restaurants on the street, we dined at a fun little place, the Green Town Tavern just a few blocks South of the theater at 110 South Genesee. 847-244-1001. Great burgers and Detroit-style pizza. They also make a great martini, and for those that enjoy a little gambling, they have five machines for your enjoyment.
Again, to see what the Genesee has in store for you, visit www.geneseetheatre.com and of course, listen every Sunday at 2 p.m. WCPT820 as I will continue to offer some comps for their shows.
