Wayfarer Theaters Highland Park “PRESENTS”!

When one thinks of a movie theater, one doesn’t expect to see a mix of theater, film and music, but one of the wonderful things about the Wayfarer Theaters in Highland Park is that they are far more than a movie theater, they are a community center, so they do far more than just show films.

Yesterday, Jane and I were invited to be witness to “Riding For America” a live performance with film, music ( songs by Nancy Hays, performed by her) and the story of an African-American jockey, Isaac Burns Murphy, and how he became one of the greatest sports figures of the 19th century. Nancy has written the book about this young man’s life as his mother, America, born into slavery, made sure that her son would have the opportunities that were before him.

The book is interesting and Ms Hays, along with her son, worked it into a play, and then a screenplay. While they are working to get to the point where it does become a film, they are presently bringing it to schools , allowing people to learn a great deal about the man, the times and of course, some history relative to discrimination.

With some wonderful acting ( two performers), some dynamic music ( performed by Ms. Hays) and projections with actual film, we watched and learned. After the 59 minute presentation, we had a question and answer period and then Ms. Hays had some items that she sold and autographed for the patrons.

The next event is Monday, February 23rd at 7 p.m. “The Jim Dent Story”, a powerful story of a caddie to a PGA legend. This is Black History Month, a perfect time for Wayfarer to wayfarer, theater, theatre, highland, park, highland park, popcornspread the word. To reserve your seats www.wayfarertheaters.com

The theater is located at 1850 2nd Street in Highland Park and they have indoor validated parking

They also have the greatest popcorn in the Chicagoland area.

As I said from the very start- this is not a typical movie theater. The staff here is quite professional and they care about your comfort as well.

By the way: You can become a member at $25 per month and see movies every day, or as we did one day, two with a break to go down the street for a lunch.
