The corner service guy

[rating=4]For years, growing up, every gas station ( and they were on every corner, or so it seems) was also a service station. In our high- tech world, they are gone. Or are they? What happened to the service bays of the old days? Well most have become convenient stores where while you are filling your tank ( we all do it ourselves in the modern world) you can buy a loaf of bread, or a gallon of milk, or even a pastry. The days of getting you car fixed on the corner by the local guy went out with the advent of the computer technology in our cars. Or so I thought.

While driving through Deerfield, on Deerfield Road, I saw that the Mobil station on the corner of Deerfield and Saunders/Sanders still had two bays and a sign that Rays Auto Service was coming. I thought I had gone back in time. Ray’s did open and when I had a problem with my air conditioning, after going to a Kia dealer and hearing what it would cost, I went over to the new guy to see what he could ( or would do). Imagine my surprise when he came in at half of what the dealer was going to charge. Pretty impressive. While I did not have a waiting room with free coffee and or snacks, I was able to leave my car there and go home, returning the next day to a car that could supply me with air conditioning, saving almost $175. That was a pretty expensive cup of coffee.

Ray is a great guy and is as fair as one could ever hop to meet. Here is the best part- he is honest. If you need it, fine, if not, he will not try to sell you something. Ah, the good old days are back! At least at  Rays Auto Service located at 2201 W.
