On today’s show, we were visited by ms Vanetta Roy, who along with her brother is building a chain of casual seafood spots, not only in Chicago, but all over the United States ( and possibly more!). We will review the entire menu in the future, but today, we had a sampling of some of the very special items they prepare. Our food came from the Old Town location at 1143 N. Wells Street ( at Division) aka the start of Old Town. Frank and I along with our engineer and producer were able to sample the wings, the fried catfish ( they were delicious), we also had “dirty rice” and “Collard Greens” ( I had never tasted them before- not spicy and very tasty). The last item was the fried biscuits ( an almost beignet, but far less heavy).
This was a sampling of the large menu available at the 11 locations they have opened since their start in 2012 ( just 8 years ago). Some are dine-n and others “Grab-N-Go” and delivery. As we learned from Ms Roy, what they serve is not “Soul Food” or “Black people food”. While they do follow many of the foods of the Louisiana are, items such as Fried Green Tomatoes, fried Lobster ( I can’t wait to try that one” and their chicken wings ( smothered in Hennessy sauce, adding something special to the sticky wings) and various other seafood treats. Surfs Up is on my list of to review and we will bring our wine to Old Town in the very near future and report back to you.
The Old Town location is open 11 a.m. til 10 p.m. Tuesday thru Thursday.
