It is getting close! Yes, Highwood Redhead Days is approaching! This year, a gathering of redheads (and their admirers) will be the “happening event” in Highwood on Saturday, June 10th and Sunday, June 11th. Thousdands of redheads (and their families and friends will visit Highwood and partake in great food and beverages as they bond with each other and express their pride in being a redhead ( or living with one) and gain recognition as a “player” for this special event. Sponsored by Ginger’s Pub and Alex’s Washington Gardens working with the Highwood Chamber of commerce, this has become a very special event for the North Shore.
There are festivals like this overseas, but when it was brought back to Highwood, the chamber of commerce jumped on the prospect of bringing something magical to Highwood. It worked and is now a tradition. Highwood, that tiny suburb just to the north of Highland Park, a place known as “restaurant Row( Green Bay Road has been a dining spot for decades)”, I recall the first of these days. We were heading up to Alex’s Washington Gardens ( a restaurant that I had the pleasure of reviewing) with the grandkids. Finding a parking space was a bit difficult and we saw more people than normal on the street. The kids mentioned that they appeared to be “redheaded” and then Jim Stoeker explained this to me while we were dining. He had witnessed a festival while in Europe, and being a redhead himself thought, why not Highwood? So he pitched it! The chamber bought in as did other businesses and “voila”- Chicago Affiliate Redhead Days was born and grows each year.
Don’t Have red hair? In fact, even if you don’t have hair, come and enjoy the friendly atmosphere that the local businesses have created for this special week-end. Thousands of redheads will be there. There si no admission to the event and plenty of restaurants will offer specials. Being a festival, there are also many other boots and attractions to fill your day. Redheads are fun people! Come and see for yourself. For current info visit www.facebook.com/RHDChicago.
