I’ve been to many holiday light shows over the years, but Illumination at the Morton Arboretum continues to stand out as one of the best—and one of the best values—for the entire family. Now in its 13th year and voted as one of the top 10 Botanical Garden Holiday lights in the country. This annual exhibition spans 50 acres, featuring a 1.3-mile walking path, and each season introduces new lighting effects that elevate the experience even further.
I was genuinely amazed by how many trees were decorated and how beautifully the wooded backdrop was lit to enhance the natural colors. Over 20 illuminated displays feature animal sculptures, and shimmering laser lights add a magical, glittering atmosphere throughout the trail. Over 1000 trees are lit, 1200 lighting devices, and music throughout the walk
Families with kids will especially enjoy the s’mores kits available along the path. Fire pits are placed throughout the trail where you can sit, relax, and toast marshmallows using the long roasting sticks they provide. Midway through the walk, you’ll find the large Illumi Dome, which serves hot chocolate (with or without alcohol), brownies, Rice Krispies treats, and my personal favorite—extra-large, holiday-decorated shortbread cookies.
