“I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream” Judgement Day on Broadway (Chicago)

***** For some time, two Chicago broadcasting legends, Steve Dale ( the pet man) and Paul Lisnek (the political expert) have been arguing over ice cream flavors at Windy City Sweets ( a tremendous candy shop in Lakeview).

The shop owner John Man’chester is known as “The Candy Man”, my theater friends know me as that ( at every opening, I have pockets full of Sunkist fruit gels for the other critics and PR people and some of the actors as well), and so I felt the need to get involved.

WHAT A SHOP !

Located at 3308 N. Broadway (not far from Wrigley Field) in Lakeview, this is not “just” a candy store, it is THE candy store and John also has some great flavors of ice cream. His ice cream is what started the whole deal-

Paul felt that the Peppermint Ice cream was the best. John did say that this is one of his best selling flavors, but one must remember that peppermint is probably favored all year, over other novelty flavors. Steve selected the Banana Pudding (a seasonal flavor, for the most part). From hearing them speak, Paul claims that the Peppermint won by a landslide, while Steve claims that there were some missing ballots (sound familiar?) and that there is no question as to the winner!

I arrived at the store located at 3308 N. Broadway at 3 p.m., met John and looked at the shop. This is an amazing store that caters to the public. They had every holiday covered  ( Easter/Passover etc) and items that I will be trying with my wife later.

The ice cream was served (in cups, not cones as it is Passover). They looked great and I could see the richness of the product. John said they try to offer the best of the best to their patrons. Ice cream with the real stuff (the banana pudding had real pieces of banana mixed in).

I enjoyed each spoonful of both of these flavors- understanding why each selected the choice they did. I went back and forth a bit, trying to determine which would be the one that I would drive to the city for. To be honest, I probably would drive there for either , but I am a banana guy, so for sure the Banana Pudding would be worth the trip for. Sorry Paul, but I need to be honest.

I would love to hear from my readers ( as well as listeners on WCPT820 am Sunday 2-3 p.m.) If you go to Windy City Sweets, try the two flavors and let me know what you feel- albresloff@yahoo.com will work. I will see how the vote goes and re-visit with Steve and Paul in the fall.
