Chicago is a savvy theater town! It seems that New York is learning that this is the place! Yes, it is the perfect place to try a play before Broadway and again, to start a national tour. This morning the press was invited to the Nederlander Theatre ( formerly the Oriental Theatre) to meet some of the people involved with the North American Tour of the Tony Award-Winning Bets Musical, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” based on the 20th Century Fox film of the same name. The opening will be on the 19th of March, which is just 10 days away.
As many of us are aware, most tours hit us for 7-14 days ( if we are lucky) and then head off to points elsewhere. FYI- This production will be here until May 14th, allowing many more patrons to see this magnificent production ( some will see it more than once). While we were treated to meeting some of the cast members today, the greatest part of the morning was in fact, walking into the theater itself. Walking through the doors was an eye opener. There were computers and make-shift tables and wires everywhere. They are re-doing the theater to make this show feel as it did in New York.
They will , or course, clean all of this up by opening night, but if you look at the areas to the rights and left of the stage, you will see a windmill and an elephant that are not a part of the decor. The stage is a mix of theater, nightclub and cabaret with the title on a scrim that can move up and down- as needed.
Another FYI- when patrons enter the theater, they will see a well choreographed cast moving into poses and slight dances (Sonya Tayeh is the Choreographer) and we were able to see her “call” the moves. A sensational visual experience that will make people want to come to the theater early.
When you enter the theater, you will forget that you are in the Chicago Theater District and on Randolph Street. You will imagine yourself in Paris, a dazzling and spectacular universe of its own. You may find yourself wanting to dance to the sounds of the iconic music that is the roaring twenties, French and International. I am sure many of us recall the “Can Can” as a dance and of course as a musical ( film starred Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLane) but it is in fact a dance that is all part of the mystique that you will find when entering Moulin Rouge”.
I am ready! I am excited! I hope you will be there to enjoy it as well. Tickets start at $52.50 and are available now at all of hte Broadway In Chicago box offices or by visiting www.BroadwayInChicago.com
