Finding out the history of Cory Goodrich thru her book, “Folksong, a Ballad of Death, Discovery and DNA”

Highly Recommended **** As a theater patron, who attends many plays per year, there are several actors (and actresses) that I count as friends. In fact, some of them feel like they are family. The others are familiar to me and in some cases, although I have never spoken to them one-on-one, from watching them do “their thing” over the years, I have felt as if I did “know them”.

One of these talented performers is Cory Goodrich. Many of you have watched her on the many stages of Chicago. Some have also seen on her on episodes of the TV shows shot in town ( “Chicago Fire”  as one example), and last year, Cry was one of the local spokespeople for one of the “diet programs” on their ads.

I have watched her on many stages, from Munster to The Mercury. She has been a country singer, a Wisconsin housewife and while she is a musician and singer, I think of her as a complete actress. In fact, there is no challenge to great for Cory!

Ms Goodrich has written a book! The title is “Folksong, a Ballad of Death, Discovery, and DNA. Published by Finn-Phyllis Press (published in the year of Covid ) #57106008R00204  ISBN: 978-1735974323). I found the book to be well written. It is difficult to share one’s life with the reader, but Cory seems to have adjusted to the fact that in order to tell her story she had to tell it all and she does.

I have often thought that actors (or in fact performers of all kind) have something inside them that they fear will explode if they do not find an outlet. Maybe that is why they perform. An actor/actress can step into another life (even if only for a few hours). In every role that Cory plays ( or has played), she is no longer the girl from the “broken home”, she is no longer “not the image of her mother”, “not the little girl who her dad gave up for a new life”. She becomes the character in the play and the thoughts of her past are gone!

In her biography, Cory takes us through the battles, the ups and downs (more downs than ups) and her relationship with her parents. I will not give anything away, but will tell you that what transpired in her life made her the solid actress she has become. I now see how she is able to become as emotional as a script or director might ask. Her life has places to draw from, and she tells us all about it.

The book details her life, her growing up, her relationship with her mother (and father and step-father) and dealing with the death of her mother. Were they akin? Were they opposites? I think each reader will draw their own conclusions as to the growth of this talented young lady who can do it all! Not only an actress and an amazing musician, Cory can paint and do anything “artsy”.

I credit her with deciding to share her life with all of us and if you have watched her in a play, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this marvelous biography. I have always felt close to her in watching her onstage. I love her even more for taking her life and sharing it with us all.
