Several years ago, I reviewed a book by Dr. Elana Ashley, of Northbrook. Dr. Ashley is attempting to reach both young and old on” making America Bully Free!” Yes, that would be wonderful, but as well know, many people are not even aware that they are being “bullied”, so when they read her book, “Big Bully Holly Howler” they are not always sure exactly what is taking place.
Recently I met with, and did a small interview with the Doc in her home, where I was able to view some of her amazing artwork as well as discuss her latest book, “Bullying and Prevention Strategies: Interview with Educator and Author Dr. Elana Ashley”. I found her book not to be a book, but in reality a transcription of the interview that took place between Dr. Ashley and News Writer, Sue Masaracchia-Roberts relative to “Big Bully Holly Howler” ( available in both English and Spanish versions).
In the interview, we learn about her cause and how she uses her writings and her puppets ( she has some spectacular characters) to assist her in getting her point across. She discusses how hatred gets into our lives and as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” states, :You’ve Got To Be taught to Hate”. I know that if you put three kids together to play, all of different ethnic backgrounds, they will play and have fun. If a parent or guardian tells one that they should “not” play with one of the others, they will, in order to please said adult, cease playing with that party. Thus begins “hate”!
While I find the interview charming and enlightening, I found this not to be considered a book, but in fact, a well written interview with some marvelous drawings to help tell her emotional feelings about what “Bullys” are. This interview looks at how adults ( and children) can see some warning signs of a relative, friend or even themselves becoming a “bully”. She talks about self-esteem and what can help one improve upon what they have and become a better person. There is no question that Dr. Ashley is concerned about the “Bully” situation and feels that we need t continue to educate our young people ( and their parents, if possible) so that we can put a stop to this terrifying problem.
She touches on methods of finding resolution, becoming more positive, improving self-esteem, building higher values and of great importance caring about others as if they were you!
