“Downsizing does not mean less closet space”

As we prepared to make our move from Deerfield to Glenview, one of the things that we found out is that many of the apartments we were viewing had smaller closets. Our last few homes had walk-in closets in the master allowing us to “spread out”. Buildings that were builtduring the 1970’s and 1980’s did not have huge closets. In fact, one would call a 12′ wall of closets “wonderful”. Here we are, downsizing from two bedrooms and a loft office, to two bedrooms with zero loft space, and while the actual living space is very close, it was the closets that were going to “hit us where it hurts”!

We called several closet companies to have them come out and bid on the job. While they showed us some wonderful looks, the cost was  far, far. out of range. This was someone else’s apartment ! We are just renters. However, we did need the space and after having several companies bid, I was told about a smaller, family owned (not a franchise operation) company called Fix My Closets, a very clever name indeed. I called owner Roger King who truly lived up to his name. He is the “King of Closetry” (if there is such a title). I advised him that we had possession of the new apartment and were moving in, but wanted the closets done before so. He came out to meet me, took a tour of the master and guest closets (as well as the pantry, linen closet and hall closets for a later job) measured, discussed our needs and went back to his office.

Here are the closets just after painting:

closetThe very next day, Roger sent me drawings (three dimensional) depicting what the closets would look like when done. He also sent his pricing which was 20% lower than the others who came out. I won’t give you exact amounts, but will tell you that if I were to have gone out and bought the materials myself, I probably would have spent as much (and more than likely would still be working on the job).

We opted to do the two main closets and this morning, after our painters left, I got the call that Bob was on his way. Bob arrived at around 9 ish in the morning and went to work. He was finished with the two closets by lunchtime. Incredible! I am not sure if there is another word that surpasses “incredible”, but will say that this company certainly exceeded my expectations. When Jane got there to take a look, she was amazed, calling others to tell them just how our wall of closets was now in a position to contain all that we had hanging in our 8′ x  7′ walk-in. It will all fit. Thanks to Roger and his staff!
