Most of you are aware that I have been doing Santa Clause “stints” for over 50 years. In fact, Several years ago, Robert Herguth of the Sun-Times did an article ( front page, no less!) about me. December 27th, 2017.
I enjoy being “Santa” and look forward to making young people smile. We know that for many inner-city kids, Christmas is not what they see on TV and in movies.
For several years, I have been working with a group of people, friends, who find themselves in fortunate positions and wanted to “give back” to underserved communities. They call themselves the “North Shore Helpers”. They have great sweatshirts, RED and warm). Four years ago, they became involved with an organization that was in need- a place where they could accomplish their goals!
The organization is The Primo Center in Englewood, a place where hope and happiness can be just that special gift from a “wish-list” or a gift card allowing a mom to make sure her kids get what they were hoping for.
Pre-Covid, we could be in the building with the families, dancing, singing carols, eating pizza and cookies. Photos with Santa were easy and fun. Music played loud, kids, who you might not expect to hear laugh, were laughing and having a great time.
Then came Covid- it has changed, BUT these caring people found a way to still help those in need. They still come to the center. Santa ( FYI- I am their Santa) is still there, BUT now on either a carriage or sleigh with horse ( thanks to the good people of Noble Horse –www.noblehorsechicago.com 312-266-7878. Oh What Fun It Is To ide on the streets of Chicago during our mini-parade. The kids LOVE IT!!!
The North Shore Helpers make sure that the kids have a great day, a special day. They get a goodie filled stocking, self -selected gifts, a chance to see and have a photo with Santa Clause and this year, they added a Bouncy House Snow Globe to give the kids something extra.
This is an annual event and of course, donations are always accepted ( and needed). For info and to donate visit www.northshorehelpers.com.
