Christmas Day 2021

Another Christmas celebration ( as Santa) during this era known as Covid-19. For many years, my Christmas Day has been spent at Saint James Church on South Wabash Avenue. Before Covid, it was pretty much an all day affair as hundreds of people came through the doors, were treated with Christmas kindness, a wonderful dinner, courtesy of Polo Inn ( of Bridgeport), and lots of goodies for the adults and kids. As Santa, the kids ( and a few adults) posed for photos and of course, the kids picked out the toys and games they had hoped for, each taking home a bag of items that will make for memories.

I love Christmas and what we do at St. James. Many of the people that come each year ( and they do return) have a wonderful day as they dine with us and get some gifts that without St. James, they would not have. Our normal procedure allows for them to be served as Chef Dave prepares the complete holiday dinner- beef, chicken, yams, veggies and of course homemade pie. Church members/volunteers work hard at making sure each diner feels as if they are having Christmas Dinner with friends and family. It is always a joy for me to be part of.

As we all know, last year, our lives changed and our routines had to be altered. When I got the call this year that we were doing “our thing” this Christmas, it brought a slight tear to my eye. I truly missed last year and was happy to make my return appearance in my second home ( to the North Pole).

The routine has changed due to Covid rules, but the atmosphere and the happiness could be felt around the entire south side. Santa could not be with the diners and families, but I was there watching as each person or family moved to the posts. The kids got their toys and games as well as some school supplies and books. The families were given their  delicious meal “to go”, along with some groceries and clothing to keep them warm as we start to get some colder weather.

Today was a gift weather-wise as even though it was far from a “White Christmas” in appearance, we did not get wet or cold and in fact, the sun shone brightly on Wabash Avenue, so waiting for their turns was an easy task. They were able to have a photo op with Santa but from a distance. They also were able to take a yellow poinsettia home. The folks at Saint James think of everything, for sure!

For me it is an honor to be with these folks on this special day. Watching their eyes light up as they fill bags and bags of goodies and knowing they will have a meal to remember.
