What a year! Theater productions were opening on a regular basis, and most of the houses were near to sold out. This may be a sign that the economy is turning or just that people need diversion more than ever, but as a lover of live theater, it sure makes me feel good to know that the talented actors of Chicago are playing to audiences that want to be entertained. Last night, At Drury Lane Theater-Oakbrook, all of our great Chicago talent ( not just onstage, but off as well) dressed to the nines were witness to a marvelous presentation of scenes, songs and comedy as well as some marvelous acceptance speeches ( to the music of Linda Slein, who at one time was asked to “step away from that piano” as she played when their time was up) and an evening filled with surprises.
From the opening number ( from “Monty Python’s Spamalot”) we knew we were in for a fun filled two and a half hours. Michael Weber as always, puts together a tight script and truly makes time stand still. Very few of those in te audience were moving about or stirring as the awards went on. Oh, perhaps a drink here and there, but for the most part, this was the shortest two plus hour award presentation I have ever sat through. Thanks Michael and thanks to your stage manager Colleen Tovar for keeping the pace to go along with your script and direction.
